What Is Histamine Intolerance?

Histamine intolerance is a condition in which people have difficulty tolerating histamine, a naturally occurring compound found in many foods and medications. Symptoms of histamine intolerance can include body aches and fever, as well as gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea and stomach pain.

Histamine intolerance is often mistaken for food allergies, but the two conditions are actually very different. While food allergies typically cause an immediate reaction—such as hives, itching, or swelling—histamine intolerance symptoms may take several hours or even days to develop.
